June’s Busting Out All Over
June 2009. Beautiful weather in Central New York. Activities galore in May and now June
Most important May Occurrences: May 7th meeting at the Radisson with members of the club to discuss the future of our club. A survey and letter of invitation were sent out to members in April The purpose of the letters and special meeting was to get input into how the club should function and how the club can meet the needs, desires and expectations of members. The meeting was very productive in that many suggestions were put forward and a frank discussion was held regarding activity of the members. The June board meeting will be held on June 4th at 6PM at the Radisson to move forward on the suggestions made by members. Refer to the members only area for a summary of the May 7th meeting. Bingo May 19th Again we had a great turn out of residents at St Luke’s with members Diana Haldenwang, Charles McMahon, Bob Hemstrought, Pat Hamer and Jim Hamer in attendance and Key Clubbers Courtney Daniels and Brianna Daniels. May 21st dinner at Thornberry’s was Youth Speaks Out. We had 4 speakers who made fabulous presentations. They were: Samantha Coyne from Proctor High School Key Club with a presentation regarding the perception of students at Proctor High. I thought her presentation was right on target regarding the negative perception that many have regarding the environment, culture and student behaviors at Proctor. Joseph Caldwell from Notre Dame High School with a presentation regarding the Lost Boys of Sudan and the crisis in Darfur. Very interesting and informative regarding the initiative of the Notre Dame students in assisting with the building of a school by one of the lost boys and request for communication with President Obama regarding the Darfur crisis. Hannah Hage had a very heartfelt and moving presentation regarding teenagers today. It was focused on the need for friends to listen, to provide honest feedback and support for other teens. The need for non judgmental friendship of teens was clearly and explicitly detailed in her presentation. Thao Pham from Proctor High School Key Club regarding her tenure as Key Club Lt Governor. Another heartfelt and emotional presentation regarding her experiences and growth as a result of her involvement in Key Club and as Lt Governor. She was retiring her Lt Governor shirt and pins and explained why each (three pins and the shirt) had so much meaning for her. She also expressed her appreciation for the support (financial and logistical) she received from the Kiwanis Club of Utica during her tenure as Lt Governor. I wished I had been able to record it as it was a complete justification of all that we as Kiwanians do. Left to right Hannah Hage Hannah Hage, Joseph Caldwell, Samantha Coyne, Thao Pham.
Left to Right Charles McMahon, Thao Pham, Dianna Haldenwang June 2009 Len Wilbur/ Jim Blackshear Luncheon is being discussed at the June 4th Board meeting regarding all aspects. For the present it is not being held on June 11th as previously announced. Stay tuned for future developments. We will be having Bingo on June 16th at St Luke’s. This will be the last one of the summer. We will restart on September 15th. As always help is needed and the residents really do enjoy the activity and the visits from our members and the Key Clubbers. June 25th Clambake at Tiny’s Deck. 5:30 PM Cash Bar 6 PM Clambake.
